National Technology Week™

Red River College

Events 2008

  1. November 3 - Model Wind Turbine Contest for Grade 9 and 10 students at RRC Notre Dame Campus South Gym. Students are provided with materials to design and construct a working model wind turbine. There are trophies for (a) Best Design; (b) Best Construction (based on the design); and (c) Highest Voltage Output. This is partnership between CTTAM, Skills Manitoba and RRC.
  2. November 5 - Annual Engineering Technology Student Pep Rally at the RRC Notre Dame Campus South Gym. Students from Civil, Mechanical and Electrical disciplines are provided a free hot dog lunch. Each discipline enters a four-person team in a (a) pie-eating contest; and a different team in (b) a relay trike race around an overhead running track. The event typically features a local radio personality. Students also have an opportunity to view departmental displays which gives them an idea of the type of projects they should be considering for their AR projects in their senior year.
  3. November 19 - Annual Technology Awards Luncheon in the Prairie Lights Restaurant, RRC Notre dame Campus. While this luncheon does not happen during National Technology Week, we have always considered it an NTW event. It has been moved to later in November because we had too many events during NTW. Over 75 scholarship and bursary awards will be distributed this year totaling over $50,000.
  4. November 19 - A Cardboard Boat Race for Grade 11 and 12 students which will be held at the 17 Wing (Air Command headquarters) pool. The event features about 12 groups of teams of four who design, build and float a boat, with passengers, made from cardboard. Extra points are given for boats that can accommodate additional weight. This event was moved from NTW this year because there were too many events that week. The event is co-sponsored by RRC, Winnipeg technical College and Skills Manitoba.
